Friday Bowls

Belrose Chemist Triples 17 Mar 2023 – St Patrick’s Day ‘Green on the Green’

It was an afternoon of Green on the Greens as 48 players many sporting Irish shirts, blouses and hats celebrated St Patricks Day in a game of Belrose Celtic Trips. The Irishness of the contest started with the changes at various ends which tested the IQ of most of the non-Celtic bowlers and led to some heated interpretations of the new instructions. The presentations afterwards found Paddy still in the Club as prizes of Guinness, (Swiss) chocolate, (Australian) potatoes, Irish glasses (made in China) and Baileys found their way into the mix.

The day belonged to one man, Dennis Gorrick, who left the scene weighed down with cans of Guinness, bottles of wine, cash and chocolate. He managed to win

  • the Jackpot of $240 shared with Gill Gorrick, Terese Bodie, Judy Kent (St Ives), Richard Lewis, Del Connors and Kaye Alderton
  • third prize in the Celtic Trips (with Gill Gorrick and Terese Bodie)
  • first toucher (an Irish invention)
  • a raffle prize

grinning even more broadly as Gill does not enjoy either (Swiss) chocolate or Guinness.

There were other winners:

  1. Lindsay Morris connived to win a set of glasses by bowling the first wrong bias (an Irish invention) and with Colin Horne and John Tomlinson received spuds and wine for “effort” (another Irish invention).
  2. Del Connors won a bottle of Baileys for drawing out Dennis Gorrick’s name to share in the Jackpot.
  3. The gallant trio of Lorraine Hazzard, Kay King and Wayne Morris (Asquith) did actually win the competition and some cash.
  4. Peter Newland, Ian Tink and Neil Mills came in second and almost got their green fees back.
  5. Maggie Murphy, Julie Baker and Jan Keller (Seaforth) were not to be denied a prize and claimed fourth spot in the Trips (another Irish invention).

Fortunately, St Patricks Day is recognized only once a year and hopefully it will not fall on a Friday next year though Dennis Gorrick will disagree.
