Steve Kerr, Zone 9 Singles Champion 2023-24
Zone 9 Singles Finals – 26 Aug 2023
It was a great day of bowls at Belrose on Saturday with the Zone 9 Singles finals and the Women’s Region 15 Singles Regional Play-offs being played together on the one green. The Zone 9 State, Senior and Reserve semis were on in the morning with a strong showing by three of Belrose’s finest: Steve Ashdown, John Campton and Steve Kerr all vying for a spot in the afternoon finals.
In the Zone 9 State division, we were all hoping for an all-Belrose final but Rowdy fell agonisingly short at the very end to give Mona Vale’s Graeme Wong the semi-final win on the last end. In the other State semi, Steve Kerr came up against Harbord’s Harry Archer and won through to the afternoon final.
The State final turned out to be a cracker! Kerrsy and Wongy going blow-for-blow for 31 ends with Steve Kerr the ultimate winner by a whisker. The large spectator crowd loved it.
In the Seniors Division final, Steve Ashdown came up against Harbord’s Terry Warder (Senior Jackaroo and NSW rep) in what looked like being a great match. Steve started out strongly however Terry dug deep to claw back the lead and eventually had a strong win against Steve.
In the Reserves Division we had a great final between Warwick Bridge (Chatswood) and Jane Gibson (Harbord). It was a nail-biting finish and Jane almost became the first woman to play for Zone 9 in the State Championships. It was 24-24 going into the last end however there can only ever be one winner. Warwick prevailed and Jane was a more than worthy runner up.

In the Women’s Region 15 Regional Play-offs running on the same green, the Senior Singles winner was Chris Gordon (Harbord) and the Singles winner was Maria Lind (Manly).
