Rex Johnston Open Pairs 15 – 16 May 2023

We had a full field and great weather for the 2023 Rex Johnston Open Pairs tournament. The weather started out a bit unsettled on Day 1, but improved throughout the day to a fine and sunny afternoon. Day 2 started out cold, clear and sunny and just got better as the day went on.

The format was 4 bowl pairs with a total of 8 games, each game was 10 ends over the 2 days.

This year’s competition remained in the balance until the very last game and came down to an exciting round 8 match between the Steve Ashdown/Shawn Thompson team and the Tim Jarrett/Mark Blackwood team. It was do or die for Mark, if he won the match he would win the tournament, however if he lost the last game, there was a mix of teams that could get into first place. As it turned out, Mark was leading 14-6 after 8 ends but went down on the last two ends, and Shawn won the game 15-14.

In the final wash-up, it was Tony Taylor who won the day – congratulations to Graham and Tony from Harbord.

Congratulations go out to all the players and thanks also to all the helpers and officials. These tournaments couldn’t run without volunteers and helper and they are very much appreciated. Club Belrose did a great job providing a wonderful venue, excellent greens and keeping all the players well supplied with ‘refreshments’.
