Zone 9 State Triples Champions: Mark Bowen, Steve Lowe and James Brown
2023-24

2023-24 Zone 9 Triples Finals – 22 Oct 2023

The Zone 9 State Triples Championships were held at Club Belrose this weekend in perfect conditions. The greens were running well (thanks to John and Joey) and the sun was shining.

In the semi-finals on Sunday morning, the Harbord team of Paul Brittain, Rufus Balfas and Col Green were defeated by the Dee Why team of Paul Somers, Scott Garrick and Brad Langelaar. The other semi was an all Belrose affair with Steve Gliddon, Steve Kerr and Steve Vanderveer being defeated by Mark Bowen, Steve Lowe and James Brown.

It was a great match up for the final and, in the end, we weren’t disappointed. The match started out as a one sided affair with Brownie’s team on fire and Brad’s team just trying to survive. Dee Why were down 2-17 after 13 ends and it looked like it might all be over, however, with the spirit and skill of great players, the Dee Why boys found a strategy that worked well – once they got the mat they went to short ends.

The strategy worked, and Dee Why won 8 of the last 12 ends in the game winning 17 shots to Belrose’s 5, to make the last end a real nail-biter. In the end, however, Belrose prevailed and won the match 22-19.

Congratulations to all the players, it was a truly great final. We look forward to watching the Belrose boys at the State Championships next year.

The Zone 9 Senior Triples were held at Harbord with the Bulls team of John Venteman, Graham Hartmann and Steve Ashdown being defeated in the final by the Harbord team of Terry Warder, Mark Alexander and Paul Leckie 20-23.
