2023-24 Championship Singles

We played our Major Singles semi-finals and final today in very warm and humid conditions. The semis didn’t disappoint us as we watched two excellent game unfold.

The match ups for the Semis were:

  • Richard (Guv) Wise v Matt Blackburn
  • Steve Kerr v Steve (Rawlo) Rawlings

Guv and Matt went head to head from the start and Guv pulled out to a narrow lead after 12 ends. Matt then dug a bit deeper and dominated the second half of the match to win 25-15.

Steve Kerr and Steve Rawlings played an outstanding semi. The final score did not reflect the quality of the game. Rawlo was relentless and no matter how well Steve Kerr played, he found he couldn’t keep Rawlo out. In the end, Steve Rawlings defeated Steve Kerr 25-7.

The final was set up to be a beauty. Matt and Steve last met in a Singles final in 2012 with Matt winning that event. In the 2013 Singles final, Steve defeated Crawford Linton and last year he defeated Rohan Dennis. Both Matt and Steve have a great record in Singles finals at Belrose, Steve having won it twice previously and Matt five times.

As the final unfolded, Steve kept up the relentless pressure and, in the end, Matt succumbed to him, just like all his other opponents had. This is the second year in a row that Steve Rawlings has won the Singles at Belrose. He has now won it 3 times overall.

We wish him all the best for the upcoming Champion of Club Champion Singles in May.
