2021 Club Major Pairs Wrap Up
Congratulations to Steve Kerr and Matt Blackburn, who won an incredibly close Club Pairs final against Steve Gliddon and Steve Ashdown today, 21-20.
Matt is no stranger to winning Championships at Belrose. He has won the Singles Championship 5 times (he is the current Singles Champion) and this is his third Pairs win. This is Steve Kerr’s first Championship win at Belrose and I expect we’ll see many more.
Steve Gliddon and Steve Ashdown are also no strangers to winning Championships. They have a strong history of winning Championships. Steve Gliddon has won the Singles at Belrose (as well as multiple Singles wins at Gordon and North Sydney) and was also runner-up this year to Matt in the Singles. Steve Ashdown has won the Pairs here in 2016 as well as multiple District and Zone titles.
This was a very strong final field and the game showed the quality of the players. It was neck-to-neck for the first 8 ends but then Glidds and Plum pulled off three great ends to give them a margin of 9 shots after end 11. Steve Kerr and Matt hit back quickly with three huge ends of their own to jump into the lead by 4 shots after 17 ends. Once again, Glidds and Plum fought back to take it to an amazing 20-20 scoreline after 20 ends!
The last end was the stuff legends are made from. It came down to the two last bowls in the end – 1 for each skip, however Matt had the last bowl. Plum drew to within one metre to an off-centre jack near the ditch to be holding match, however Matt, with his last bowl, drew to within a foot to win the match.
Great bowls guys, well done!
Go Bulls!
